After School Matters is a Chicago-based nonprofit organization that offers after-school and summer programs for thousands of Chicago high school teens to explore and develop their talents while gaining critical skills that will set them up for success in college and beyond.

Since 1991, more than 350,000 teens have participated in our project-based paid apprenticeships led by professionals in the fields of arts, communications and leadership, sports, and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math).

Programs take place at community locations throughout the city, including three ASM buildings: downtown at Gallery 37 Center for the Arts, the Michael and Karyn Lutz Center in Belmont Cragin, and the Pullman community at Gately Park.

Currently, After School Matters' annual operating budget is approximately $35M and employs approximately 500 staff across the organization.

Summary of Position:

In this position, your role will be to ensure participants in After School Matters' Power Up program have a positive experience during their enrollment process, Challenge activities, and throughout the program sessions. "Challenges" are activities aimed at guiding teen participants through the exploration of their interests and how to pursue them in college and in their future careers. The Program Intern will also support with identifying exemplars to highlight in marketing communications.

These positions will take place in person. There are 3vacancies. These temporary positions are scheduled to work up to 20 hours per week.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

Administrative and Program Support:

  • Support Program Management team with creating content and execution plans for weekly "challenges"
  • Support with creating rubrics to evaluate teen submissions
  • Reading challenges and providing feedback to teens
  • Tracking and entering teen data into various spreadsheets and databases
  • Email teen participants about enrollment status, and follow up regarding outstanding action items
  • Provide technical support with Google Classrooms, including creating Google classrooms and getting the classrooms ready for weekly meetings and discussions
  • Send weekly communications to Power Up Mentors, including reminders and key updates
  • Support Program Management team with identifying key stories and anecdotes from teen participants to highlight in organizational marketing materials.
  • Participate in program reflection sessions and make recommendations for future sessions
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to communicate with effectively, respectfully, and courteously After School Matters teens, staff, and parents via phone, email, and in-person is required
  • Excellent time management skills, including the ability to use various tools such as online calendars, spreadsheets, etc. is required
  • Ability to prepare clear and thorough written communications that are free of spelling and grammatical errors is required
  • Microsoft Office skills, specifically Word, Excel, Outlook is strongly preferred
  • Experience with online or digital data entry is strongly preferred
  • Google Classroom experience is strongly preferred
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality is required

Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program at a college or university is required; Education, Youth Development, or Social Work majors are preferred
  • Former participation in After School Matters programs is a bonus but not required
  • Commitment to providing respectful and empathetic customer service is required

Additional Requirements:

Staff are required to provide proof of COVID-19 Vaccination or have an approved medical or sincerely held religious beliefs exemption prior to starting employment. If a medical or sincerely held religious belief exemption is approved, weekly Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) testing is required part of any reasonable accommodation.
