Job Description

Description: CIPE's Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) team is committed to supporting democratic and market reform-oriented civil society actors across the region to play a leading role in building democratic institutions. The intern will learn about CIPE's programming in the LAC region and be responsible for assisting CIPE's LAC team in preparing written deliverables, researching current events related to the economy, entrepreneurship, and democracy in the region and advancing the LAC department's external communications.

Reports To: Associate Program Officer, LAC or Program Associate, LAC

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn, through direct participation, about CIPE's LAC programs and project management techniques.

  • Gain insight into the field of international development and democracy, nonprofit management, and the various topics pertaining to CIPE's work.

  • Improve research and analytical skills, including collection, synthetization and organization of information.

  • Develop communications and social media expertise.

  • Enhance communication skills (writing, listening, oral) in a team setting.

  • Learn about jobs in international development and clarify professional goals.

  • Explore areas of interest within CIPE's regional and specialty departments

Key Areas of Responsibility:

  • Assist with project development and management for new and active projects in the region; including proposal development, drafting grant agreements/contracts, writing status reports, etc.

  • Assist with short-term research and writing projects to support LAC programs in anti-corruption, think tank development, women's economic empowerment, entrepreneurship, business association capacity building, and other focus areas.

  • Help maintain the department's social media presence, develop monthly newsletters, and write blog posts under the supervision of LAC staff.

  • Assist in the creation of business development materials for various projects within the regional portfolio

  • Research and track current events in the region and create weekly news digests for program staff.

  • Assist with written and spoken translation and editing.

  • Attend and report back to the team on virtual events thematically aligned with CIPE's work.

  • Research new funding opportunities and update program staff.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • An undergraduate (junior standing or higher) or graduate student majoring in Political Science, Economics, Business, or International Relations preferred, but others are encouraged to apply.

  • Strong verbal and written communications skills in English and Spanish. Portuguese is highly valued but not required.

  • Social media and communications experience.

  • Familiarity with the LAC region's economic and political environment.

  • Demonstrated interest in international issues related to democratic transitions and the role of market-oriented reform in economic and democratic development.

  • Ability to take initiative and work independently using sound judgement.

All CIPE Spring 2023 internships will be remote, though interns may come into the CIPE office if they choose. Interns who plan to visit the office will be asked to submit a vaccination card or a request for reasonable accommodation. This is a paid internship.
