Data Center Technician III

Reports To:

Job Summary:

The Data Center Technician III will support both the Physical and Virtual Infrastructure of the organization or customer and its facilities. The Data Center Technician will contribute to design and intentions of and implement data center best practices. This shall include related industry standards that align with associated processes and procedures as and where applicable. The Data Center Technician will leverage industry experience to contribute to the team.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Directly support and complete all scheduled data center MACD (Move/Add/Change/Delete) including device labeling, power connectivity, and network cable connectivity.
  2. Complete hardware support work orders involving: hardware and cabling MACD, certification, troubleshooting and break-fix
  3. Asset management, auditing and daily work log and ticket tracking
  4. Provide SmartHands assistance, including troubleshooting, as required for multiple customers at various sites within specified SLA response times (on-call duties may apply)
  5. Maintain a safe and secure operating environment within the data center, or other designated space, and report any violations to their immediate supervisor or lead
  6. Detailed and thorough documentation and record keeping; directly contribute to process improvements, documentation improvements, and other work-related items
  7. Maintain site security protocols, badging requirements, and data and asset protection procedures and report any violations to their immediate supervisor or lead
  8. Ensure all media storage devices (Hard drives, thumb drives, CD, DVD's, etc.) are properly logged, secured, and documented to ensure compliance with customer and legal retention practices and report any violations to their immediate supervisor or lead
  9. Utilize advanced knowledge with server and network hardware and components, copper and fiber infrastructure installation and testing, data center productivity and support tools, applications and software (Windows, Linux, SSH, RDP, Putty, etc.), and data center infrastructure management (DCIM) tools
  10. Coordinates and implements equipment and material receiving, shipping, and RMA support as and when required in accordance with established policies; assists in updating or revising processes as appropriate
  11. Provide vendor and security escorts as needed
  12. Provide general cleaning on raised floor, cabinet and rack exterior surfaces, work benches, storage areas, and other areas as needed and as scheduled
  13. Coordinates and implements standard and emergency operating procedures for data center, or other designated spaces, in accordance with run-book provided by team leadership
  14. Provide status reporting regarding data center, or other designated spaces, service availability, performance, capacity utilization as required
  15. Daily error log reporting and physical DC inspections for general health, power, cooling, hazards, etc.
  16. Leverages advanced knowledge to perform or coordinate equipment installation and delivery schedules in accordance with set project plans or other direction
  17. Demonstrates commitment to team and customer through attention to detail, reporting issues, concerns, and mistakes as soon as they occur, and willingness to learn and teach
  18. May serve as interim Team Lead as needed
  19. On-Call duties as needed (may include 24/7 support)

Physical and Mental Requirements:

  • Must be self-motivated, detail oriented, positive in approach, professional
  • Experience creating, developing, and implementing project process improvement(s)
  • Must promote the company culture and mission to all employees, vendors, clients and business partners
  • Minimum 3 years working in data centers, telco, IT operations, or related technical field
  • Knowledge of server and network equipment and software support configurations
  • Understanding of AC and DC power principles as they relate to data center power distribution and best practices
  • Experience working independently and demonstrated high productivity rate
  • Must be able to act as the company liaison for interface with customer representative(s)
  • Experience leveraging complex problem-solving, critical thinking skills, and the ability to effectively read, write and give oral presentation(s)
  • Must be able to: work at heights from a ladder; work in confined spaces; lift as much as 50 pounds; move as much as 75 pounds; and move pallets of equipment leveraging an unpowered pallet jack
  • Must be able to see and distinguish different colors, read small print, and hear and recognize audible signals such as device alarms within a consistently loud environment with varying light levels
  • Excellent team and customer communication skills, orally and in writing

Education, Certification, License, and Skill Requirements:

  • Must possess at least a High School diploma or GED equivalency
  • Minimum 3 years working in data centers, telco, IT operations, or related technical field
  • Experience with server, OS or Network
  • Data center certification (including in-progress) are a plus
  • Must be proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Ability to work alone or in teams with minimal instruction
  • Must meet Company minimum driving standards
  • License Required-NO

Career Path:

  • Data Center Technician Team Lead; or
  • System Administrator I; or
  • Junior Data Center PM; or
  • Data Center Operations Expert

  • The Communications Technician I must be able to act as the Company liaison for interface with customer representative(s).
  • The Communications Technician I must possess proven problem solving skills, critical thinking skills and the ability to effectively read, write and give oral presentation(s).
  • The Communications Technician I must be able to work at heights, off of a ladder and in confined spaces, lift up to 50 pounds and move up to 75 pounds.
  • The Communications Technician I must be able to see and distinguish different colors, read small print and hear and recognize audible signals such as dial tones.
  • The Communications Technician I must be able to travel within the branch territory and/or regional territory as needed.

Education, Certification, License, and Skill Requirements:

  • Must possess at least a High School diploma or GED equivalency.
  • Must possess a minimum of two (2) years of experience in telecommunications or related technical field and demonstrate the ability to supervise others.
  • Must possess and be proficient with the listed tools.
  • Must have proven skill level to interpret blueprints and other project documents, including but not limited to, specifications, reporting and quality requirements.
  • Must know the universal communications color codes.
  • Must meet Company minimum driving standards.
