Explore the natural beauty of Kirkland Parks this summer. Co-lead outdoor camps for ages 5-7 and 7-10 in two amazing park settings. Guide and inspire children to appreciate their natural surroundings. Uncover the magic of bugs and animals, flowers and trees, various forms of weather and bodies of water through art, science, and exploration. Children are naturally inquisitive, just think with your leadership and encouragement you could inspire them to be the next Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859), a naturalist and explorer considered one of the most influential figures in the history of natural sciences.

Essential Duties:

  • Work in a team of two to develop and implement program activities with an environmental theme for an outdoor setting.
  • Control camp expenditures under an operating budget defined by the Department. Oversee the timely ordering and control of camp equipment and supplies. Plan and prepare in advance to have supplies ready for activities.
  • Manage any issues that may arise including, but not limited to camper behavior issues, parent complaints.
  • Establish rules with campers. Review policies and emergency procedures. Provide a safe, healthy and inclusive environment.
  • Be an active member of the camp community by participating in camp activities such as hiking, crafting, games and other activities.
  • Monitors and ensures appropriate participant behavior and adherence to camp rules. Communicate with parent/guardian when needed.
  • Be prepared and organized. Come ready with creative solutions during challenges or when things don't go as planned.
  • Communicate effectively with co-instructor, campers and parents.
  • Be attentive, joyful, energetic, encouraging and responsible. Set a good example for campers and be a positive role model.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Good verbal, written, and telephone communication skills are required.
  • Ability to interact courteously with the public to acknowledge both compliments and complaints.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated good judgement in problem solving and responding to customer needs.
  • Proficiency in standard computer software, such as Microsoft Office Suite applications Word, Excel and Outlook
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be 18 or older by the date of hire
  • Must have a genuine interest in working with children
  • Enthusiastic, responsible, dependable
  • Must possess or be able to obtain First Aid/CPR certification prior to start date
  • Must successfully complete a thorough background check as required by the Child/Adult Abuse Information Act
  • Must have good written and verbal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with children in an outdoor/environmental setting
Other

Hours of Work
5 hours per day, 9:30am-2:30pm, 4 days per week from June 24-July 18. 6 hours per day, 9:30-3:30pm, 4 days per week from July 22-August 15. Training days and times will be scheduled the week of June 17, details to be confirmed. After hire, but prior to camp start, there will also be hours allocated to plan the weekly activity schedule for summer, and to procure supplies as needed. During camp sessions attendance is extremely necessary for all staff positions. Day camp staff are seasonal positions that support a mandatory staff to camper ratio. There is very little opportunity for scheduled days off other than Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.

Working Conditions
Performs work in an outdoor park setting (shelter provided). Exposure to extended periods of direct sunlight and/or cool and damp weather is possible. The job requires frequent light lifting (5-10 bs.) and infrequent heavy lifting of up to 50lbs.
