Safety Specialist

Fike Corporation, a rapidly growing international manufacturer of pressure relief, explosion protection, fire suppression and detection equipment, has an opportunity for a Safety Specialist position. Fike is a privately held business located in Blue Springs, MO with over 400 employees locally & over 1,200 employees worldwide.

Job Summary:

Provides generalist support in the areas of Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) management. Responsibilities include supporting EHS and injury prevention programs to reduce or eliminate occupational incidents, injuries, and/or financial losses. Supports the investigation of incidents and provides employee training in safety and loss prevention. Supports regularly scheduled safety team meetings, safety walks, and employee safety concerns system.

Primary Responsibilities:

1. Reviews and updates general EHS policies and procedures to be followed by company or plant personnel in compliance with local, state, and federal rules and regulation, including the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and State Department of Natural Resources (DNR)

2. Inspects or coordinates the inspection of facilities to detect existing or potential injury and health hazards; recommends corrective or preventive measures where appropriate.

3. Participates in and coordinates the analysis of all OSHA recordable accidents, injuries and illnesses; participates in incident reporting and follow-up activities as needed; reviews data for trends and recommends corrective actions or preventive measures where indicated.

4. Keeps managers and employees alerted to the hazards of working with toxic fumes, dangerous chemicals and any other hazardous substances.

5. Assists in preparing and submitting individual incident and summary reports as required by regulatory agencies; maintains safety files, training records, Safety Data Sheets (SDS), and other reports according to government regulations and internal policies.

6. Escorts employees of all agencies conducting safety, fire, environmental, and general facility audits.

7. Ensures facilities are safe and healthy for Fike guests and employees.

8. Assists in the injury management process. May include care, treatment and recovery of the injured employee. Supports the administration of the workers' compensation program, including working with the insurance carrier to cut down on lost employee time and control of claims.

9. Coordinates and delivers EHS training programs.

10. Supports orientation for new employees to cover Environmental Health and Safety.

11. Maintains continuous education in EHS knowledge by attending educational facilities, seminars and conferences. Participates in established networks and professional societies. Reviews professional publications.

12. Maintains the confidentiality of all information processed.

Performs related duties as assigned. Regular and consistent attendance is required.

Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and walk. The employee frequently is required to talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit, use hand to finger, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. The employee is occasionally exposed to guarded moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Job Qualifications:

REQUIRED: Associates degree or working towards a Bachelor's Degree in a safety related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience. One year of experience involving industrial safety.

PREFERRED: Previous experience in an industrial or manufacturing setting.
