Position Summary

Provides support to clinical team to complete necessary tasks for patient care. Under the supervision of the clinical nurse manager, Lead RN, and/or physician or APP completes medical forms and facilitates prescription refills. Supports collection of new patient data and chart prep for return visits. Support obtaining prior authorizations for prescription medications. Role may also include supporting incoming phone calls regarding patient and consulting Clinical Nurse Manager, Lead RN, and/or physician to present patient's problem and resolve the problem or direct calls to appropriate person. Demonstrates working knowledge of all facets of role, relevant regulations, and organizational and departmental policies and procedures. Performs other duties and projects as assigned. Performs all duties in accordance with regulatory requirements and organizational policies and procedures.

Primary Job Duties & Responsibilities
  • New patient calls and data collection to prepare charts as assigned.

  • Prepare charts with updated information, procedures, notes, path, labs, etc. in the interim of previous visit to ensure clinicians have information needed for patient visit and care.

  • Handle prescription refill requests according to Company procedure and be proficient with SureScripts or other refill software as needed.

  • Obtain prescription authorizations as needed using appropriate applications and software. Document authorizations in patient chart with coverage dates.

  • Support completion of forms as needed to support patient care (i.e: Insurance and disability, Handi-Cap parking, DME requests).

  • Support documentation and referrals for DME requests.

  • Answers phone calls from patients, physicians, hospitals and home health agencies, using assessment skills to determine the nature of each call, its urgency, how to resolve the question/problem and to whom to direct the call.

  • Document in patient's chart to accompany message for nurses and doctor.

  • Be able to discuss with physician and/or nurse practitioner the steps necessary to insure proper patient care.

  • Be able to discuss with the physician any abnormal labs or tests presented to them by other staff members so that appropriate action regarding further orders can be carried out and charted, if necessary.

  • Responsible for hospice and home health agency questions regarding patients and documenting the physician's decision regarding the request.

  • Contact emergency room when a patient is directed there, give explanation, diagnosis, and a phone number where physician can be contacted.

  • Handle prescription refill requests according to Company procedure.

  • Will be expected to work at any Company location to help meet Company's business needs. Will also be expected to work overtime when given sufficient notice.

Job Qualifications and Requirements

Education

  • High school education required.

Certifications/Licenses

  • Must have CPR and BLS certifications.

  • Medical Assistant Certification preferred (Required in some states).

Previous Experience (including minimum years of experience):

  • 1-2 years of experience as MA with hematology/oncology patients in a clinic or hospital preferred.

  • Computer Skills:

    • Proficiency in MS Office Word, Excel, Power Point, and Outlook required.
