Position Summary:
KES Inc. is seeking a Structural Engineer III for part-time support in providing in-depth structural analysis of structural foundation designs and/or ship hull modification drawings for naval vessels in accordance with GSO, ABS and shock A or B requirements as applicable. Analysis shall include but not limited to basic 2D stress, strain and sheer, vibration/modal analysis as well as weldment, bolting and material selections.
Responsibilities:
  • Examine ship as-built and/or modification drawings to determine new design compatibility issues.
  • Responsible for checking final drawings for accuracy, efficiency of design, cost effectiveness and functionality.
  • Perform all documentations, calculations, analysis, mentor/train junior engineers in the analysis and design process.
  • May be expected to lead a shipboard design team in the capture of existing configurations as well as new equipment installation requirements.
  • Perform structural calculations (stress-strain) in a fast-passed environment providing design engineers/technicians real-time design guidance regarding structural member selection and material grades.
  • Perform finite element analysis (FEA) of structural designs using DDAM techniques using Siemens FeMAP or a similar analysis tool.
  • Perform bolt-strength analysis and flange bending calculations.
  • Perform modal analysis of hull foundations/ship structure.
  • Document all calculations in MathCAD or similar graphical format.
  • Expert in ship construction techniques, terminology and general characteristics (port/starboard, fore/aft, ABL, CG, mold lines, DC, V-lines, etc.)
  • Lead junior engineers/designers on shipcheck activities, such as identifying existing ship structure and foundations and recording sizes and locations in respect to internal ship datums and frames.
  • Work with structural group lead in the resolution of LARs and drawing review comments.
  • Sign as Engineer on KES structural drawings verifying that the drawings meet government requirements as applicable.
  • Responsible for explaining and/or modifying designs in accordance with Planning Yard instruction.
  • Interface with NAVSEA Tech Warrant Holder for NAVY requirements as applicable.
  • Provide training and resource materials for the structural group.
  • Other duties as assigned by the structural group lead.
Experience:
  • 10+ years' of structural analysis experience which included reading/creating engineering drawings.
  • Proficient with an FEA analysis suite such as FeMAP (with DDAM knowledge).
  • Must have strong computer skills and be proficient with 2D Autodesk AutoCAD software, MathCAD (or similar) and Microsoft Office.
Qualifications and Education Requirements:
  • Bachelor degree in Naval Architecture, Civil, Mechanical or Marine Engineering. (15 years' relevant experience may be substituted for BS degree if capable of performing the required analysis/calculations.)
  • This position requires an existing U.S. Government granted personnel security clearance at the Secret level. U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Must be willing and able to travel for shipchecks.
Preferred:
  • Knowledge of NAVSEA and/or ABS naval design requirements for structural design.
  • Some welding skills/background.
  • Some background with Solid Works and 3D AutoCAD
  • PE preferred
