About the Role

The on-call, Part-Time Casual Mechanic / Maintenance Person will supplement the three (3) person staff in Tacoma. Part-Time Mechanics / Maintenance Persons usually work fewer than full-time hours but may work full-time when covering for staff on vacations or leaves.

The Mechanic Shop focuses on keeping our customers' freight moving with short-term repairs to our vehicles, equipment, and facility. Major mechanic repairs are sent to a third-party vendor.

  • Rate of pay is $30.83 per hour, with wage increases under a Teamsters Union contract occurring each April 1st and October 1st through Oct. 1, 2027.
  • Shop employees are supplied with coveralls.
  • Possibility to work into full-time employment.
  • This position is located at 1675 Lincoln Avenue Loop, Tacoma, WA, 98421.
  • All candidates selected to interview need to bring a current driving history going back a minimum of 10 years.
  • Obtain and maintain a TWIC card.
  • Must be able to pass a DOT drug and alcohol testing, and a background check upon job offer.
  • Possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A with Air Brakes endorsements.
  • Have a current DOT medical card.

What you'll do:

  • Assist Mechanics under general supervision of the Shop Lead.
  • Comply with OSHA safe working rules and regulations along with FMCSA job specific requirements.
  • Perform a range of repairs and maintenance on vehicles and equipment.
  • Regularly maintain, inspect prior to and post use of safety equipment for personal protection.
  • Attend and pass training for OSHA, Company, & job specific requirements such as but not limited to hazardous materials, eyewash, fire extinguisher, etc.
  • Must be Forklift and Top Pick certified within 90 days and maintain those qualifications.
  • Ensure electrical and electronic items are inspected and serviced to remain operational.
  • Perform Facility maintenance and Freight Yard maintenance.
  • Perform tire repair, break down, plugging, patching, buffing, balancing, mounting, and dismounting.
  • Refuel, lubricate, and perform services on all types of equipment, tractors, forklifts, generators, chassis, and other power equipment, as needed or directed.
  • Work is performed with only general supervision. Performs other duties as assigned by the Maintenance Leadman.

  • Must be a team player and able to get along with others.

And these qualifications:

  • Work a variety of schedules.
  • Must become a union member if hired.
  • Work indoors and outdoors in a freight yard.
  • Must be able to work in all types of weather conditions while performing maintenance.
  • Must be able to read, write, and communicate using the English language.
  • Must be capable of entering and exiting cabs of tractors 25 or more times per hour, which requires flexibility to step up/down two or more steps with bending, twisting, and turning movements.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds on your own.
