Primary Duties

  • Help lead, plan, execute, and complete geotechnical tasks on assigned projects independently and collaboratively with a heavy focus on transportation projects in TN including the Tennessee Department of Transportation
  • Review design and construction submittals for geotechnical compliance with applicable codes, design standards, project requirements, and contract documents
  • Geotechnical investigations and design activities for mostly transportation-related projects such as roadways, retaining walls, hydraulic structures, bridges, and railroads
  • Involvement in communication with both internal and external clients
  • Geotechnical technical analyses, preparation of proposals and reports, and coordination with designers and contractors to implement recommendations on plans and in the field
  • Engage in supporting the development of the technical scope of works and fee proposals, as well as responses to RFPs related to geotechnical services
  • Participate in marking efforts of both internal and external clients
  • Help grow and supervise a small staff of professionals and technicians as needed
  • Function as a Project Manager on certain projects as needed, but project management is not the sole focus of this position

Core Competencies for a successful candidate

  • Must be able to independently make decisions and recommendations that will impact a project's activities and direction
  • Be a technical expert, leader, and authority in projects and tasks involving geotechnical engineering.
  • Be knowledgeable of today's technical standards, including but not limited to AASHTO LRFD, FHWA, USACE, AREMA, etc.
  • Exhibit excellent communication skills, and ability to work collaboratively with team members and clients and demonstrate expertise in managing several complex tasks simultaneously
Preferred Qualifications
    • 10 years of experience in the general field of geotechnical engineering
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, MicroStation (PCSTABL, LPILE, and SHAFT), or other software as appropriate
    • Ability to independently complete proposal preparation and develop geotechnical data/engineering reports
    • Experience with the review of other's work for compliance with project technical requirements as applied to project submittals
    • Ability to independently complete and/or coordinate analyses associated with the settlement, slope stability and embankment design, foundation design, seismic analysis, ground modification design, retaining wall design, lateral deep foundation response
    • Strong oral and written communication skills and ability to work in a team environment.
    • Demonstrated leadership skills
    • Successful candidates will have an attitude and commitment to being active participants in our employee-owned culture
    • Participation in related professional societies (ASCE, TSPE) is encouraged
    • Proficiency with geotechnical software including gINT, Slope/W, Seep/W, APILE, LPILE, MSEW3.0, GRLWeap, Settle3D (or other settlement software)
    • The ability to develop and execute designs using spreadsheets and MATHCAD
    • Minimum of 3 years of experience in 1 or more of the following:
        • Deep Foundations
        • Shallow Foundations
        • Retaining Walls
        • Seismic Analysis including Liquefaction and Ground Modification Design
        • Pavement Design and Rehabilitation
        • Lateral Analyses
        • Experience in subsurface investigations
        • Field & laboratory testing and the determination of in-situ material properties
        • Soil compaction and earthwork construction
        • Soil mechanics
        • Dams, levees, and hydraulic structures
        • Foundation inspection and assessment
        • Landslide and slope stability evaluations
        • Bearing capacity and settlement
        • Design and construction of foundations on alluvial soils
        • Design and construction of foundations on karst bedrock geology, foundation inspection, and assessment
        • Erosion protection design
      • Project Management experience
      • Candidates who reside locally are preferred

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license
  • Previous experience with Microsoft Office applications, MicroStation or other software as appropriate
