This role is a part of New Shepard, a reusable suborbital rocket system designed to take astronauts and research payloads past the Karman line, the internationally recognized boundary of space. Through operational reusability, New Shepard supports our mission of lowering the cost of access to space.

As part of a diverse and hard-working maintenance/sustaining engineering team you will maintain, sustain and improve the design and develop of ground system instrumentation and control (I&C) hardware and software for the Launch/Land Complex and associated ground support equipment for the New Shepard program.

Van Horn Specific information

Being at the heart of Blue Origin operations, the West Texas Site in Van Horn, TX offers eligible employee's additional attractive financial incentives to supplement their competitive base earnings, including a living allowance and relocation assistance. Eligibility for these additional benefits is based on the employee's ability to permanently relocate to Van Horn, TX, or travel to Van Horn from another Blue location a minimum of 50% of the time.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Maintain, sustain and improve instrumentation and controls (I&C) systems for all New Shepard Ground Subsystems

  • Participate in I&C project scope definition, defining project priorities, and the day-to-day activities for maintenance engineering and sustainment engineering at the launch site

  • Work with in-house production organizations to resolve challenges encountered during procurement and install of I&C equipment supporting ground systems.

  • Work with ground systems, vehicle operations and maintenance teams to resolve challenges encountered with I&C equipment used to launch, land, and maintain the flight vehicles.

  • Perform operations and maintenance activities consistent with design intent and defined requirements.

  • Ensure that new development and updates to ground I&C software are completed on-time.

  • Work with Lead Systems Engineers to ensure that I&C subsystem requirements are developed and maintained to accurately define the ground electrical control and instrumentation sub-system.

  • Take ownership of a project, including procurement, engineering deadlines, and implementation timeline to support an on-time project schedule.

Minimum Qualifications

  • BS degree or higher in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent)

  • 3+ years of experience as a Controls Engineer working on automation and/or electromechanical systems

  • Work experience dealing with process automation and electromechanical / mechatronic systems

  • Experience in the setup, commissioning and programming of industrial controls equipment and related instrumentation.

  • Experience in maintaining, servicing and replacing electrical controls devices and instrumentation.

  • Ability to read and understand electrical drawings and instrumentation piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&ID).

  • Experience with electrical drawing changes, markups and revisions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience as a Controls Engineer working on automation and/or electromechanical systems

  • Experience with using AutoCAD or AutoCAD electrical to modify and create electrical drawings.

  • Experience with programming Allen Bradley, Siemens and Omron PLCs is desirable.

  • Experience with electrical controls safety standards and machine safety standards is desirable.

  • Experience in selecting appropriate electrical circuit protectors, wire and cable, sensors, safety hardware, PLC hardware, motion control systems.

  • Experience in reporting on the status of projects, technical analysis, compliance to standards, issues resolution, and stakeholder communication.

Compensation range for on site WA applicants is $109,980-$153,972
